The next morning, Ruth dropped Charlie at Broughton airport.

‘What now?’ he whispered during the parting embrace.

‘I’ll come to Brisbane while you’re there if you like.’

‘I would like.’

She drove over to Roscoe’s. She’d been enjoying her weekly yoga class since she’d started living in Myddle, but she didn’t much feel like going today. She stopped off in Roscoe’s kitchen so he could make her a cup of tea and she could avoid the class for a few more minutes.

Chandra walked in, less of the usual waft about her. There was a slump in her centre where she normally held herself erect.

‘Hello, Ruth,’ she said. ‘Have you heard from Evie?’

Ruth shook her head.

‘I’ve upset her.’

Ruth crossed her arms.

‘I didn’t mean to,’ said Chandra.

‘Her mother just died,’ Ruth said. ‘She’s the last person in her family. And she’s feeling it.’ Ruth wondered whether she should go on, and then thought if she didn’t tell Chandra nobody else would. She softened her tone, to say it as gently as she could. ‘And she probably doesn’t need people telling her she doesn’t understand how beautiful her land is.’

‘She never talks about it,’ said Chandra. ‘I’m sure she isn’t aware of the intrinsic nature of it.’

Ruth shook her head. ‘I’m pretty sure she’s aware, Chandra.’
